Is't it good if a global individual may be able to use seven languages!

English is the language of global village today. Americans simplified British English and made it American. In the last some decades, American English has been getting acceptance around the world. English was introduced and promoted by the British in all the continents. Even today, British pronunciation is considered better in many parts of the world. British English pronunciation has some impact of its historical development, that's why some high standard.

American English is simplified in spellings, pronunciation and style of speaking and writing. They don't have more pauses in speaking and have many abbreviated forms in writing.

American English is easy to learn. Many people feel it difficult, as basically, in speaking Americans don't have more pauses and are simply fluent. Technologies and the Internet are making us learn or develop in American English.

Spoken English is influenced by geographical reasons. As it is said that in Singapore, they speak no English but Singlish and in India -Hinglish. In Australia and South Africa, they have their respective accents. In today's world, good spoken English skill is very important. People go to do jobs and businesses around the world. They have to communicate in some common language -English. Telecoms and aviation developments have also played very important role in making the world a global village. Social networking sites, skype, ebay, paypal and messengers etc. have have made the world talk and interact in English as our forefathers used to chat in local vegetable markets in small towns.

Spoken English, if it is flexible - British or American. It is very important skill for every developing global individual. Written English is equally important, people have to read and write around the world - emails, contents for sites, blogs, papers, magazines and books and so on. It is again required British or American Written English.

In today's global village, English - British or American & spoken or written- has to be used and needs to be developed consistently and persistently.

Let us take the case of Indian English. English is very important language in India. Professionals, Businessmen,Politicians and even government employees use English in day to day living and working lives. Many regional languages are used in India as Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali have been added.

English is being taught in schools and colleges.Indian writers have been doing well in English writing on global level. In fiction and non-fiction, they are also recognized in the USA and Great Britain. And Indians are very good at learning American English. In fact, India had also been ruled for around 150 years by the British. So, English is there as good as it is in England or America, besides, they also love speaking in many regional languages. Only basic difference is that they never formally made their English- Indian English.

Indians are adaptable in English, when they talk and write in American English or for Americans, they find it very easy to adjust. They have already started playing important role in development of the world. How many Indians are in different parts of the world, developing in different areas to different nations.

After all, language is just a tool to communicate and we all need to learn and develop in many languages. O.K., English is good to use as common language of the world as it is used in whole world but other languages are equally important as German, French, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese etc. In fact, seven languages are good to be learned, if not Hindi, Portuguese or Arabic or Italian or some others. Isn't it good if a global individual can use seven languages and develop oneself and the world.

THE CASES

The nominative:
The Mädchen singt. ---------------- The girl is singing.

The accusative:

The dative:
Er gab dem Mann das Buch.----------------- He gave the man the book.

The genitive:
Das sind Herrn Kluges Blumen.----------------- Those are Mr. kluge'd flowers.

Let's try to understand how they work in English:

  • When a noun or pronoun is used as the subject of a verb, it is said to be in the Nominative case.
  • When a noun or pronoun is used as the object of a verb, it is said to be in the Accusative case.
The horse kicked the child.
Raju threw a ball.
In the sentences, the horse and Raju - are subjects, therefore, they are in the nominative case.
and the child and ball are objects, therefore, they are in the accusative case.

  • Compare -
Rama gave a ball.
Rama gave Hari a ball.
Noun -ball is the object of the verb-gave. In the second sentence - Hari was the person to whom Ram gave a ball.
Hari is called the Indirect Object. Ball, the ordinary object, is called - the direct object.
In German, Ball is in the accusative case and Hari is in the Dative case.

  • Some more example:
Rama gave Hari a ball - Rama gave a ball to Hari.
I bought Rama a ball - I bought a ball for Rama.
She made Rekha a new dress ---She made a new dress for Rekha.
Will you do me a fovour?--- Will you do a favour to me?
Fetch the boy a book - Fetch a book for the boy.
Get me a taxi - Get a taxi for me.

We see that Indirect object denotes the person to whom something is given or for whom something is done.

  • This is Ram's umbrella.
Umbrella belonging to Rama.
Ram's is therefore said to be in the Genitive ( Possessive) case.

Future : The match will be played.

Present Continuous: The match is being played.
Past Continuous : The match was being played.

The work will not have been done.

Pronoun - it -can also be used for- the work.

It is done.
It was done.
It will be done.

It is being done.
It was being done.

It has been done.
It had been done.
It will have been done.

One more example:

You are invited.
You were invited.
You will be invited.

You are being invited.
You were being invited.

You have been invited.
You had been invited.
You will have been invited.

Learn to use -Suppose in the Passive:

Suppose in the passive can be followed by the present infinitive of any verb but this construction usually conveys an idea of duty and is not therefore the normal equivalent of suppose in the active:

You are supposed to know how to drive =
It is your duty to know / You should know how to drive.

Though He is supposed to be in Paris could mean either' He ought to be there' or ' People suppose he is there'.

0001-ENGLISH: Skills / Words / Structures

1. How to learn : The most important point in learning a language is to learn the techniques of learning. There are many techniques to be learned such as how to learn a new word, how to use the word and how to learn a rule of grammar and so on.

There are many questions as I know grammar or word but I can't use it, When I need a particular word or structure, it is not used at the right moment. LEARN TO LEARN is the ultimate solution. In many cases, the problem is attitude. You need to think big. Today, you live in a global village. If you feel that you need world-class English, you can learn faster. If you are learning to use English effectively, have patience and work hard for the long term.

2.Words: A word has its own world. First, it needs your help. If the word is new for you, it needs more help and attention. If you want that the word should come to serve you whenever you need it. Don't challenge the existence of the word. Help the word to be helped for your whole life.

Check the words you have not used in last one or two years:
fortunate, unfortunate, possible, probable. certain, sure, delighted, dismayed, glad, happy,
pleased, relieved, sad, sorry, able, unable, apt, inclined, liable, prone, prepared, reluctant,
prompt, quick, slow, convenient, dangerous, difficult, easy, hard, possible, impossible, safe,
unsafe, advisable, inadvisable, desirable, essential, good, important, necessary, unnecessary,
vital, cruel, generous, mean, selfish, wicked, clever, foolish, idiotic, sensible, silly, stupid, absurd, ludicrous, ridiculous, unreasonable, funny, strange, curious, astonishing, surprising, pointless,
useful, useless and odd.

3. Structures:
be is used to express physical or mental condition-
He was excited/ calm. They are happy/ unhappy.

With certain adjectives, e.g. quite/ noisy, good/ bad, wise/ foolish, it is possible to use the continuous form of be e.g. Raju is being foolish, which means Raju is talking or acting foolishly now i.e. the subject is showing this quality at this time but Raju is foolish, which means that
Raju always talks or acts foolishly.

Other words: annoying, cautious/rash, clever /stupid, difficult, economic /extravagant, formal, funny, generous /mean, helpful/ unhelpful, irritating, mysterious, optimistic/pessimistic, polite,
selfish /unselfish.
With some of these, e.g. stupid, difficult, funny, polite, the continuous form may imply that subject is deliberately acting in this way:

You are being stupid may mean You are not trying to understand.
He is being difficult usually means He is raising unnecessary objections.
He is being funny usually means He is only joking. Don't believe him.
She is just being polite probably means She is only pretending to admire your car /clothes etc.

Learning a new language !

Hi,
When you decide to learn a foreign language, first you need to finalize your aim : Why you want to learn a particular language. Another important point to settle is that what level of proficiency you need to develop. So, the ultimate question is like this : How much ambitious you are for a language.

You should have some burning desire to learn a language. You should feel some special love for the language, you want to learn. As it is said that ambition comes from the heart and aim comes form the mind. You ought to be interested in learning and developing the language whole-heartedly.

Once you have taken firm-emotional decision to learn a new language. Half the job has already been done. Now, as you are sure that you are going to learn. There are many ways to start learning but one thing can be easily accepted by all of us that input- I mean consistent input- is the most important factor to decide your speed of learning. Words and structures should be read and listened as long as they are not fully active. So, you need a lot of patience. A word or structure has its own world. You should not be willing to challenge its existence. You should help the word or structure, by the time, it is not fully ready to serve you.

I would like to emphasize here that if you want a word or structure to be prepared to serve you for your whole life, why you should not be patiently giving it sufficient number of revisions in reading and listening. Another way, it can be said mind learns and forgets by nature. if it has to forget something important for you. It means that you need to help your mind a bit more so that it can learn the word or structure properly forever. You must not be impatient, otherwise you should be prepared to help your mind. In fact, your mind wants to learn and it also wants to help you in using the word or structure in giving output. Words and structures expect from us that first, we should learn how to learn and keep on learning.

Learning giving output is equally important. Start giving output form the very first day. You should keep in mind that mistakes are held in giving output, they are not knowingly done. So, don't worry about mistakes, just start speaking and writing.

Ultimately, it can be said that nobody is perfect. Learning a language is a process, once you have learned how to learn. Then you need-practice, practice, practice. Practice is the real solution. Just learn more words and structures and keep on giving output without minding mistakes, someday, you can be confident and proficient in using the language and the world will recognize it. So, be patient, persistent and consistent in practice.

Just start speaking !

Hi,
Basically, if English is taught in the school-college days and you have the experience of reading, writing & even passing as a subject, if not as a language. It means that there is some basic knowledge of the language.

Practically, it can be said that if you study grammar first, you are grammatically alert again, it means by learning grammar first, mentally you become grammatically sensitive. In most of the cases, people are doubtful about their language. They feel that if They speak, others may check their grammatical mistakes. They don't start because they are sure that there may be some mistakes in their English. That is the reason, they don't start speaking whole-heartedly.

Practice of speaking is the only solution, if you have mistakes, you should not mind. In fact, mistakes are not done, they are held. If you speak and keep on speaking, that is the way, many words and structures are grammatically activated in giving output i.e. speaking. That is the way, by giving output that is speaking consistently and taking input of grammar and vocabulary, you keep on correcting your language in giving output.

So, Grammar should not be taken as a problem. Practice- whatever you can speak confidently, that is enough to start speaking- is the ultimate solution. If you want to improve in speaking skills, you need to be focussed on practice of speaking. All the problems are solved in steps.
So, just start speaking.

Speak English confidently !

Hi, English: Speak Confidently

There may be different reasons for different people. Some can speak but they don't try. Some believe that they can't speak correctly. Some feel that they don't need to speak in English. Some are doubtful about the world and also first about themselves.

Fact is that if you don't want to develop, nobody can help. So, in place of blaming to the environment and the world, it is good to be responsible for your life. In reality, you are the in charge of your every success or failure.

Once, you have taken the decision to learn how to speak in English correctly and fluently. Then, the whole world is there to support you develop. You should be first internally-prepared to work for your development of the language.

Now, when you have decided to improve your skills in the language. You have won the half battle. If you want to develop confidence in speaking English, just start speaking.
Ultimate solution is practice. You have to focus on speaking.
